William A. Ansley Obituary

William A. Ansley obituary

Source: Donna Gamble, citing Penn Yan newspaper.

William was born in Jerusalem Township, NY, July 13, 1832. He was the eldest son of Joel and Lois Ansley. He always resided in Jerusalem Township and in 1846 he was married to Anna Stoddard of the same town. To them were born seven sons and three daughters, all of who together with the wife and four sisters survived at the time.

Mr. Ansley was an agricuturist of unusual ability and devoted much of his time to scientific investigation. For more than twenty years he represented the Osborn Manufacturing company throughout Yates and Steuben counties, which gave him a wide circle of acquaintances among the farmers in the territory.

He was a born mechanic and an inventive genius, and had recently secured a patent on a piece of farming machinery from which he had hoped to realize a substantial profit.

He had a high appreciation of moral integriy and believed in the right winning at all times, and was alive to all improvements that tended to the mutual benefit of all people.

His death was very sudden and unexpected. About one o'clock Sunday morning, May 3rd, 1903, his wife was awakened by his heavy breathing. She tried in vain to arouse him, but he passed away in a few minutes with a stroke of apoplexy without regaining consciousness. His funeral was held at the Methodist Church in Branchport, the past Rev. E.S.Annable officiating on the afternoon of May 5th. The church was crowded to the utmost capacity with the host of friends and neighbors of the deceased, who came to sympathize with the bereaved family and lay a token upon the casket of one whose memory will ever be held sacred.

The children who survived are: Clarence B., Mrs. Frank Botsford, Alanson B., Joel C. and Byron B., all of Jerusalem. Charles E. of Ontario County , N.Y., James Ray of Herkimer County, N.Y., Lois Catherine of Pittsburgh, PA, Clifford V. of Herkimer County, NY, and Mary Elizabeth of Lynchburg, VA.
