Frederick Green's 'The Record'
The Record
1. Born in Canada I was very young when my father discovered I had been short changed by the use of a "Yankee dollar".
2. I was 11 years old when my father said "Two scoundrels, Jim Fisk and Jay Gould have locked up all the gold; and all the banks in the United States are bursting like bubbles." That was the Black Friday of 1869.
3. I was 16 years old when I came on a visit to Cleveland nearly a year after the Black Friday of 1873 and remained because there was an unexpected Democratic landslide in the October elections, and I was offered a position as a messenger in a bank. The head of the bank was a Republican and also City Treasurer. The bank had a front and back room and the treasurer's office was a desk in the back room.
4. In 1876 I had a position in the offie of the Clerk of the Supreme Court in the State House at Columbus -- the H.R. being just across the corridor. The eighth of January banquets had revealed the "Old Roman" Allan G. Thurman as the unanimous choice of the Democrats for President and his election was unanimously conceded by the Republicans. I was close to one who was close to Thurman and all went merry until some Democratic leaders in New York fixed a price of $1,000,000 on the nomination and went into Wall Street and sold it to Tilden. They subsidized the newspapers. The Republicans nominated Hayes of Ohio and the rest is the history of a near civil war.
5. In 1884 I was again in the Ohio State House. This time as Executive Clerk and later Private Secretary to the Governor. We had the "Coal Oil Legislature" on our hands. Cincinnati burned her court house and rioted for three days because a murderer was acquitted and we established the "intermediate Penitentiary" at Mansfield.
6. 1887-1895 I was in the Finance Department of the City of Cleveland and
7. 1896-1917 - saw me as secretary-treasurer and manager of Lake View Cemetery, a semi-eleomosynary not for profit organization, and that about completes the record of my activities.
