George H. Ansley Dies; Attorney, Banker Here

George H. Ansley of 71 Wildwood Ave., attorney here for almost sixty
years and president of the First National Bank since 1933, died about
4:30 a.m. today (Sept. 20, 1961) in Salamanca District Hospital. He was
eighty-five.


Mr. Ansley, who had been ill a few weeks, had been hospitalized since
Sept.6. He had been active in his law office and at the bank until
mid-August.


Son of a prominent early settler of Salamanca, Mr. Ansley had been active
in the business, civic and political life of the community for over half
a century.


The son of Hudson and Elzina J. Ansley, Mr. Ansley was born in Salamanca
Dec. 14, 1875. He was graduated from Salamanca High School and from
Williams College, where he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1899.
He received his law degree from Columbia University in 1902.


Returning to Salamanca, he entered his father's law office and practiced
in partnership with him until the latter's death in 1926.


Mr. Ansley served as village attorney in Salamanca before the city was
chartered and several times was city attorney. He was attorney for both
the First National Bank and the Salamanca Federal Savings & Loan Assn. He
also had been estate tax attorney for Cattaraugus County.


Like his father, Mr. Ansley was active in the Deomocratic party. He
served as chairman of the Cattaraugus County Democratic Committee from
1910 to 1914. At college, he was a classmate of Herbert H. Lehman, who
later became governor and a U.S. senator in New York State. The two were
lifelong friends.
