    • Census: 1881, London, England; 10 Campbell Road; : 75

    Notes:

The source for her surname is the birth certificate for her son Jonah, which gives her name as "Catherine Levi, formerly Moses."

    Birth:
The 1841 census lists her birthplace as "foreign parts," but the 1851 census gives it as Whitechapel.

Catherine Moses was most likely a child of the Joseph Moses who immigrated from England to Australia in 1832/33. There is no primary record of this relationship.

However, here is the evidence: When Catherine and Eleazer married at Hambro Synagogue, her father was given as a Joseph (Mr.). When Abraham Moses died in London in 1873, his will named Catherine (Moses) Levy as one of his sisters (and named two of Catherine's daughters as his nieces). There is no direct record of Abraham's father's name either, but Abraham and his family landed in Australia aboard the same ship as Joseph Moses.

Abraham's will also names a brother, John/Jacob, living in Australia. Thanks to convict records, this John/Jacob has been tied to another brother, Moses -- and the death records for both of them name their father as a Joseph Moses.

  1. 14.  Joseph Moses was born , England.

    Notes:

    Birth:
I have found nothing that reliably ties this Joseph Moses to any birth or marriage record.

Joseph married Deborah c1790, England. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Name:
Deborah's maiden name is said to be Barnett, but I have found no source for this yet.

    Notes:

The name of Joseph Moses' wife is lightly documented. Her name is given as Deborah in son John/Jacob's death record and in (apparent) daughter Phoebe's death record as well. I have not located a primary source for Deborah's maiden name or for this marriage.
