<p class="MsoNormal">There you go. If it finds any pages on your site – if it flags any <span> </span>stray mockup text  –  it's a sign that you may need the services of a content architect to help unravel things.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Signs on the wall at photocopy shops are not a reliable source of business advice, but I saw this one more than a decade ago, and it's stuck with me:</p>
<p>"Faster! Cheaper! Better! (Pick any two.)"</p>
<p>After a few minutes' reflection it seemed self-evident.</p>
<p>Once you've started a project, you can't add features, shorten the deadline -- and still cut the cost of a project. Something's got to give. It's a fundamental truth. I'm sure you could derive it from Newton's laws.</p>
<p>I'm not even sure you can maximize two of them very often. When was the last time you made something cheaper and better without extending the deadline? Have you ever completed a project ahead of schedule, and thrown in a few new features, without blowing the budget?</p>
<p>And yet, year after year, project after project, I've heard people at all levels seriously trying to achieve all three goals at once. Some of them were top management, trying to rouse the troops. Some of them were middle managers, marching the project straight over a cliff. And some of them were the actual workers -- overpromising and, inevitably, underdelivering.</p>
<p>They could all benefit from studying another sign you'll find at the photocopy shop: "You want it when???"</p>
